You wash the car. It looks fine in the driveway. Then you stop at a light in full sun, and there they are: fine circles all over the hood, like a spiderweb sitting inside the paint.
Here is the plot twist: the car wash probably put them there. And no amount of washing takes them back out.
The fix is called paint correction, and quotes for it are all over the map. Here is what it really costs, and how to tell which kind your car needs.
The short answer: Paint correction usually costs $200 to $600 for a one-step polish, $500 to $1,200 for a two-step correction, and $1,200 to $2,000 or more for show-level work. At La Jolla Mobile Car Detail, a single-stage polish starts at $239 and two-stage correction starts at $749.

How Much Does Paint Correction Cost by Level?
Most paint correction falls between $300 and $1,200. Where you land depends on how many polishing passes your paint needs.
| Level | What it fixes | Typical U.S. price | Time on the car |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-step polish | Light swirls, dull paint, light water spots | $200 to $600 | 3 to 8 hours |
| Two-step correction | Years of swirls, haze, oxidation and scratch patterns | $500 to $1,200 | About a full day |
| Multi-stage correction | Show cars and badly neglected paint | $1,200 to $2,000+ | 1 to 3 days |
Those are typical 2026 ranges from U.S. detailers and detailing guides. Expect the high end for big SUVs and trucks, and for paint in rough shape.

What Is Paint Correction?
Paint correction is machine polishing that removes swirls and light scratches from your car’s clear coat. Instead of hiding them under wax or glaze, it levels the clear coat until the scratches are gone and the paint reflects like a mirror again.
Think of your clear coat like a phone screen covered in tiny scratches. A screen wipe cleans it. It does not remove the scratches. Polishing does.
So where do the swirls come from? Mostly from washing. Brushes at the car wash, a gritty sponge, a dry towel on a dusty car. Each one drags dirt across the paint in circles. One wash does nothing you can see. Three years of them is the spiderweb you notice at every stoplight.

What Changes the Price of Paint Correction?
Four things set the price. The condition of your paint matters most.
- How many passes. A one-step polish is one machine pass. A two-step correction is a cutting pass to level the damage, then a refining polish for the gloss. Each pass is hours of work.
- How bad the paint is. Light swirls polish out fast. Years of swirls, sun haze and oxidation need a heavier cut and more time.
- The size of the car. A Mini Cooper has a lot less paint than a three-row SUV.
- The prep. Real correction starts with a hand wash and a clay bar, so the polisher never grinds grit into the paint. A quote that skips this step is cheaper for a reason.
One-Step or Two-Step: Which Do You Need?
Look at your paint in direct sun. If you only see light swirls on paint that is still mostly shiny, a one-step polish is usually enough. If the swirls are everywhere, the paint looks hazy or gray, or the car has years of car washes behind it, you need two-step correction.
Then try the fingernail test. Run a fingernail across a scratch. If your nail catches, the scratch is too deep to polish out safely. That one needs touch-up paint or a body shop, and an honest detailer will tell you so.
Still not sure? Ask for a test panel. Your detailer corrects one section first, usually part of the hood or a door, so you can see the difference on your own car before you commit.
What Would You Actually Pay With Us?

- Full exterior hand wash
- Clay bar paint treatment
- Two-stage correction: a cutting pass, then a refining polish
- Complete body wax and shine
- Tire dressing and rim clean
- Outside windows and plastic dressing
- A test panel on request before the full job

How Long Does Paint Correction Take?
A one-step polish takes about 3 to 8 hours. A two-step correction takes about a full day. Show-level multi-stage work can take two days or more.
Our two-stage correction takes the better part of a day in your driveway or garage. All your detailer needs is shade and a standard outlet. Rushing is how car washes leave holograms, so a two-step quote that promises to be done in two hours is a red flag.
Is Paint Correction Worth It?
Yes, if you are keeping the car, selling it, or putting a ceramic coating on it. Corrected paint looks newer than the car is, and correction is the only fix that removes swirls instead of hiding them.
The alternatives only hide them. The car wash will even sell you an $8 spray wax to cover up the swirls its brushes put there.
| $15 scratch remover | Car wash spray wax | Two-stage correction | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Fills scratches with glaze so they look gone for a few washes | Coats over swirls so they hide for about a week | Levels the clear coat, so the swirls are physically gone |
| How long it lasts | A few washes | Days | Until new swirls go in, years with ceramic |
| Price | $15, repeated forever | $8, repeated forever | From $749, once |
It is not worth it if your scratch catches a fingernail, your clear coat is peeling, or you are turning the car in at the end of a lease next month. And skip the toothpaste. It scratches a dull halo around the spot.
Do You Need Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating?
Yes, to the level your paint needs. A coating locks in whatever is under it, swirls included, for years. Correct first, then coat.
Booked together, two-stage correction plus a 3-year ceramic coating starts at $1,518 for a standard car ($749 + $769). Our guide to how much ceramic coating costs breaks down every combination.
How Long Does Paint Correction Last?
The correction itself is permanent. The swirls that were removed do not come back. New ones go in the same way the old ones did: through bad washing. Hand washing with clean microfiber keeps corrected paint looking corrected for years, and a ceramic coating makes that easier.
That is what Club Clean is for. The same detailer hand washes your car weekly, biweekly or monthly, from $99 a visit, so the swirls never get a second chance.
FAQs
How much does paint correction cost?
Paint correction usually costs $200 to $600 for a one-step polish and $500 to $1,200 for a two-step correction. Show-level multi-stage work runs $1,200 to $2,000 or more. At La Jolla Mobile Car Detail in San Diego, two-stage correction starts at $749.
What is the difference between one-step and two-step paint correction?
A one-step polish is a single machine pass that removes light swirls and brings back gloss. A two-step correction adds a cutting pass first to level heavier damage, then a refining polish. It removes much more damage and finishes deeper.
Does paint correction remove scratches?
It removes swirl marks and light scratches in the clear coat. If a scratch catches your fingernail or shows primer, it is too deep to polish out and needs touch-up paint or bodywork.
Does paint correction fix rock chips?
No. A rock chip is missing paint, and polishing cannot put paint back. Chips need touch-up paint. Correction can clean up the scuffs around them.
How long does paint correction take?
About 3 to 8 hours for a one-step polish and about a full day for a two-step correction. At La Jolla Mobile Car Detail, two-stage correction takes the better part of a day at your home.
Is paint correction bad for your paint?
Not when it is done right. Correction removes a very thin layer of clear coat, so a careful detailer takes off only as much as the paint needs. That is why a test panel comes first.
How much is paint correction and ceramic coating together?
At La Jolla Mobile Car Detail, two-stage correction plus a 3-year ceramic coating starts at $1,518 for a standard car. With a 5-year coating it starts at $1,825.
Can paint correction be done at home?
Yes. Mobile paint correction is done in your driveway or garage. The detailer brings the machines, pads, compounds and lighting. All you need is shade and a standard outlet.
