How Much Does Ceramic Coating Cost? Real Prices From a San Diego Detailer

Blue Corvette Stingray getting a ceramic coating in La Jolla, with the headline: $350 or $1,500? Where the money actually goes

You ask two shops to ceramic coat the same car. One says $350. The other says $1,500.

Same car. Same word on the invoice. So which one is ripping you off?

Usually neither. Here is the plot twist: you are barely paying for the coating. The bottle is the cheap part. You are paying for what happens to your paint before the bottle ever opens.

The short answer: Professional ceramic coating usually costs $500 to $2,000. In San Diego, a full mobile job from La Jolla Mobile Car Detail, paint prep and travel included, runs about $1,000 to $2,100 by vehicle size and paint condition. On like-new paint, the coating alone starts at $769.

Why trust these numbers? Every price in this guide is the same price listed on our website. We have booked detailing across San Diego since 2021 and carry 400+ reviews across Google, Yelp and Facebook.

And here is our actual price list for ceramic coating in San Diego. No ranges. These are the numbers.

Coating Sedan, coupe, compact Truck or 2-row SUV 3-row SUV, van, lifted truck
3-year coating (one layer) $769 $923 Custom quote
5-year coating (multiple layers, higher SiO2) $1,076 $1,230 Custom quote

These prices are for paint in like-new condition. If your paint has swirls or dull spots, it needs polishing first, and that is extra: a single-stage polish (The Bling Bling, exterior only) from $239, or The Wow, our two-stage paint correction, from $749. Every price includes full paint decontamination and travel anywhere in San Diego County.

Most cars need some polishing. Here is what a complete job costs, and where it lands against the market tiers above:

Complete job Sedan, coupe, compact Truck or 2-row SUV Market tier
3-year coating + single-stage polish $1,008 $1,182 Entry to mid-tier
5-year coating + single-stage polish $1,315 $1,489 Mid-tier
3-year coating + The Wow $1,518 $1,802 Mid-tier
5-year coating + The Wow $1,825 $2,109 Mid-tier to premium
5-year coating + The Wow + ceramic trim, windows and wheels $2,355 $2,914 Premium (full coverage)

Only the 3-year coating on near-perfect paint stays in entry-level territory. Everything else is mid-tier work or above, at your driveway, with travel included.

Where Does the Money Actually Go?

Putting the coating on is the short part. Getting the paint ready is the long part. Here is what a proper job includes:

  1. Wash and decontaminate. Iron, tar and road film come off, so nothing gets sealed in.
  2. Polish, if needed. A machine polish removes swirls and light scratches.
  3. Panel wipe. Strips leftover oils so the coating can grab the paint.
  4. Coat. The coating goes on one panel at a time.
  5. Cure. It hardens over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Correction is the slow part: a machine polish working swirls out of black paint on a real Wow job.
Before and after: swirl marks on a dark car hood, then the same paint polished and finished with a ceramic coating
Coat the left side as it is, and those swirls are sealed in for years.

Here is the part most cheap quotes skip: a coating locks in whatever is under it. Swirls, scratches, dull spots. All of it, sealed in for years, shiny side up. A $350 job that skips the prep does not protect your paint. It protects the problems.

Feynlab estimates paint correction alone takes 60 to 70 percent of a coating job’s time. That labor is most of what you are paying for.

What Changes the Price of Ceramic Coating?

Five things. The second one matters most.

1. The size of your car

More paint takes more time. On our price list, a truck or 2-row SUV costs $154 more than a sedan for either coating. A 3-row SUV, van or lifted truck gets a custom quote, because the paint area varies so much.

2. Your paint’s condition (the big one)

This is where quotes really split. Hold your phone flashlight close to the paint at night. Do you see fine circles, like a spiderweb? Those are swirls.

Your paint looks Prep it needs Sedan Truck or 2-row SUV
Flawless, like new Decontamination only Included Included
A few fine swirls Single-stage polish (The Bling Bling, exterior only) +$239 +$259
Swirls you can see in the sun, dull spots, oxidation Two-stage paint correction (The Wow) +$749 +$879
  • Single-stage polish: full exterior hand wash, clay bar, a one-step machine polish for light scratches, tire dressing and rim clean, outside windows and plastic dressing.
  • The Wow: full exterior hand wash, clay bar, and a two-stage correction (a cutting pass, then a refining polish) that takes out years of swirls and oxidation. Plan on the better part of a day.

Bought it new? Do not assume you skip this step. Many new cars arrive with light swirls from the dealer’s prep wash.

3. How many years of protection you buy

The 3-year coating is one layer, built for a car you will keep 2 to 3 years. That makes it a good fit for a lease. The 5-year coating uses multiple layers and a higher concentration of SiO2, the glass-like ingredient that does the protecting. It is built for a car you will keep 4 years or more, and it costs $307 more up front.

The coating is a thin, hard layer over your clear coat. It takes the sun and grime so the clear coat does not.

4. What else you coat

Paint is the main event. Trim, glass and wheels are optional extras:

  • Ceramic trim: $150 sedan, $230 truck or 2-row SUV. Black plastic stays black.
  • Ceramic windows: $230 or $345. Rain beads up and rolls off.
  • Ceramic wheels: $150 or $230. Brake dust rinses right off.

5. Mobile or shop

A mobile detailer brings water and power to your driveway, so you skip the drop-off and the ride home. With us, travel is included anywhere in San Diego County, so the driveway price is the price. That covers the coast and North County, including ceramic coating in Escondido, San Marcos, Oceanside and Vista.

What Would You Actually Pay? Three Examples

These are examples built from our price list, not specific customers.

The car Coating Prep Total
New sedan, a few dealer swirls, keeping it 3 years 3-year, $769 Single-stage polish, $239 $1,008
2-row SUV, light swirls, keeping it 6+ years 5-year, $1,230 Single-stage polish, $259 $1,489
7-year-old pickup that lives outside, visible swirls, keeping it 3 more years 3-year, $923 The Wow, $879 $1,802

Is Ceramic Coating Worth It?

Yes, if you will keep the car at least two years and it lives outside. Usually no if you plan to sell it within a year, or you do not care how it looks.

Here is the math that sells most people:

  • Wax lasts about six weeks. Keeping a car waxed for 3 years takes about 26 wax jobs. For 5 years, about 43. One coating covers the same stretch.
  • The longer coating is cheaper per year. On a sedan, the 3-year coating works out to about $256 a year. The 5-year coating is about $215 a year.
  • San Diego is hard on paint. Sun most of the year, salt air near the coast, bird droppings and tree sap everywhere. A coating takes that abuse so your clear coat does not.

But the real reason people love it is the look. After a plain wash, a coated car looks freshly detailed. Water beads up and rolls off. Dirt lets go with less scrubbing.

What it will not do: stop rock chips, fix deep scratches, or survive automatic brush washes for long. It is tough, not bulletproof.

Why Is One Quote $350 and Another $2,000?

When two quotes are far apart, it is almost always one of these:

  • Prep. The cheap quote often skips the polish, so the swirls get sealed in.
  • Product. Some “ceramic” jobs are a spray sealant that lasts months, not years. Here are the different types of ceramic coating, so you know what you are buying.
  • Layers and years. One layer for 2 years is a different job than multiple layers for 5.
  • Nobody looked at your paint. If a quote never asks about swirls or scratches, the prep probably is not in it.

Be wary of “lifetime” claims. Before you book anyone, run through the questions to ask a ceramic coating installer.

How Do You Keep a Ceramic Coating Looking New?

A coating is not set-and-forget. It only lasts its full 3 or 5 years, and only keeps that just-detailed look, if it gets hand washed the right way. Automatic brush washes scratch and dull it. Hand wash it with a pH-neutral soap and a clean mitt, and dry it with a soft towel. Here is more on how long ceramic coating lasts and what shortens it.

The easy way: Club Clean. The same detailer hand washes your car weekly, biweekly or monthly, from $99 a visit by vehicle size. Because they see your car every time, they catch where the coating is wearing and add a ceramic boost as a courtesy. That is a nicety, not a warranty, and it does not fix rock chips or deep scratches.

FAQs

How much does ceramic coating cost for a car?

Most professional ceramic coatings cost $500 to $2,000. In San Diego, our 3-year coating is $769 for a sedan and $923 for a truck or 2-row SUV, and the 5-year coating is $1,076 or $1,230, on like-new paint. With the polishing most cars need first, a complete job runs about $1,000 to $2,100. Travel is included anywhere in San Diego County.

How much does it cost to ceramic coat an SUV or truck?

Trucks and 2-row SUVs are $923 for a 3-year coating or $1,230 for a 5-year coating. 3-row SUVs, vans and lifted trucks get a custom quote, because the paint area varies so much.

Is paint correction included in the price of ceramic coating?

Decontamination is included. Polishing is its own step, priced by how much your paint needs: a single-stage exterior polish is $239 for a sedan or $259 for a truck or 2-row SUV, and The Wow, our two-stage paint correction, is $749 or $879. Paint in like-new condition needs neither.

Is ceramic coating worth it on a new car?

Yes. New paint is the easiest paint to protect, because there is little to fix first. Many new cars still need a light polish to remove swirls left by the dealer prep wash.

Is a 5-year ceramic coating worth the extra money?

If you will keep the car 4 years or more, yes. It costs $307 more up front but less per year: about $215 a year versus about $256 a year for the 3-year coating on a sedan.

Does ceramic coating replace waxing?

Yes. You still wash the car, but you skip the waxing. Wax lasts about six weeks. A ceramic coating lasts 3 to 5 years.

Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?

Only light ones. A coating is a thin, hard layer that resists the fine swirls a wash can leave, but it will not stop rock chips or deep scratches. For rock chips, you need paint protection film, which is a different product.

How long does ceramic coating take to cure?

A ceramic coating cures in 24 to 48 hours. Keep the car dry and skip washing during that time so the coating can harden fully. After that, a gentle hand wash is all it needs.
