Ceramic Coating San Diego

Long-lasting paint protection. 3 to 5 years from a single application. LJMCD-certified detailers come to you, anywhere in the county.

Quick Answer

What is ceramic coating, and is it worth it in San Diego?

Ceramic coating is a clear liquid that hardens onto your paint like a thin glass shield, and for most San Diego drivers it is worth it because it lasts 3 to 5 years and ends the cycle of constant waxing. Mobile ceramic coating in San Diego County typically runs $769 to $1,230, depending on the size of your vehicle and how long you want the protection to last. Once it cures, it protects your car from San Diego sun, bird bombs, sea salt, tree sap, and water spots for 3 to 5 years from a single visit.

Wax washes off in about six weeks and never really protects. Ceramic bonds to your paint and shields it for years from a single visit, so you stop re-waxing and start protecting.

The New Dodge Ram

Bringing home a brand-new truck like this comes with one quiet fear: the first scratch, the first sun-faded panel, that deep blue slowly going dull. This owner decided on day one it would never happen to his. A certified detailer ceramic coated it under a canopy right in the driveway, locking in the just-off-the-lot finish. Months later it still turns heads, and he barely lifts a finger to keep it that way. His detailer comes every four weeks through Club Clean, and the paint still looks as deep as the day he drove it home. His wife noticed. She signed her own car up too.

The Analogy

Is ceramic coating like a screen protector for your car?

Ceramic coating works like a screen protector for your car paint

Yes. Ceramic coating works like a screen protector for your car: a sacrificial, replaceable layer that takes the daily wear so the paint underneath stays protected.

Your phone’s glass is already tough, but you add a screen protector because it takes the daily abuse first. Scratches hit the protector, not the screen. When it wears out, you replace it. Ceramic coating works the same way for your car’s clear coat. It creates a sacrificial layer that handles:

That sacrificial layer takes the daily hits, water, UV, chemicals, and light contact, so your actual paint never does.

Critical point: Ceramic coating locks in whatever condition your paint is in. Swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation all get sealed under the coating. That is why paint correction before coating matters so much. You are sealing in a clean finish, not preserving problems.

The Basics

What does ceramic coating actually do?

Ceramic coating bonds a hard, hydrophobic polymer layer to your paint that lasts 3 to 5 years, repelling water, UV, dirt, and road grime so the finish stays glossy and washing gets easier. Unlike wax, which sits on top and washes away, ceramic becomes part of your vehicle’s surface and stays there for years.

What does ceramic coating protect against?

  • UV damage. Blocks the radiation that fades paint and causes oxidation over time.
  • Bird droppings and tree sap. Creates a barrier so acidic contaminants cannot etch into your clear coat.
  • Light scratches. A hardened ceramic layer helps resist fine swirls and minor scratches from normal washing.
  • Water spots. Minerals bead off instead of bonding to the surface.
  • Salt air. Relevant anywhere in San Diego County where coastal influence reaches.

5-star reviews

Hundreds of San Diego drivers have rated our certified detailers five stars for ceramic coating and detailing.

266

Sunny days a year

San Diego gets about 266 days of sun a year. That constant UV slowly breaks down unprotected clear coat, causing oxidation and fading. Ceramic coating blocks UV before it reaches your paint.

3-5 yrs

Protection per application

One professional application keeps protecting your paint for three to five years, through San Diego heat, sun, and coastal salt. No routine waxing required.

If you are leasing for 24 months and returning the car anyway, ceramic coating is probably not the right investment. But if you are keeping your vehicle 3 or more years, it makes financial sense on top of practical sense.

Why Us

What Makes Mobile Ceramic Coating Different in San Diego?

What sets mobile ceramic coating apart in San Diego is that a certified detailer comes to you, and who applies the coating matters as much as the coating itself.

Here’s something the ceramic coating industry doesn’t advertise: the product matters less than the person applying it. Professional-grade coatings are available to anyone willing to buy them. Same bottles. Same marketing claims. But application technique, surface preparation, and curing conditions determine whether you get 5 years of protection or a coating that fails in 6 months. We vet every detailer, then certify them to our standard, because quality control matters more than geography.

Our Standard

How does La Jolla Mobile Car Detail choose and certify detailers?

La Jolla Mobile Car Detail vets every detailer, then certifies them before they take jobs through us: a portfolio review, proof of license and insurance, a hands-on test detail, and our prep and customer-service standards.

Before a detailer joins our network, they earn it.

The Non-Negotiables

  • Licensed and insured
  • A proven portfolio of real work
  • Their own water and power, fully self-sufficient
  • Passes a hands-on test detail before joining

Beyond the Paperwork

The basics are the easy part. What we really screen for is harder to fake: clear communicators who lead with customer service, and genuinely good people. Skill gets you considered. Character gets you in.

And after they join, your feedback is our quality control. A detailer either makes it right, or they are out of the network.

5-Year Protection

The honest math: This isn’t about saving money on wax. It’s one application that protects your paint for years, keeps it looking newer longer, and ends the cycle of short-term fixes. You still wash it, you just skip the routine waxing.

Additional protection available: ceramic coating for trim, windows, and wheels, plus paint enhancement and correction. Ask your detailer for details.

AFTER YOUR COATING

Ceramic Is Step One. Club Clean Keeps It Performing.

A ceramic coating reaches its full 3 to 5 year lifespan only if it is washed the right way. Automatic brush car washes scratch and dull the coating. Club Clean is our mobile hand wash and detail membership that maintains your coating for you, on a schedule that fits your life. The same certified detailer who applied your coating returns on a regular schedule to keep it clean and add fresh ceramic wherever the coating is thinning, so your protection keeps performing past the base term. No contract. Twice-monthly plans run $129 for cars, $149 for SUVs and trucks, and $179 for three-row vehicles. Top-off adds ceramic over the clear coat where it is thinning; it does not repair damage from accidents or other incidents.

The Science

The Science Behind the Protection

Your clear coat looks smooth. It isn’t. At the microscopic level it is full of tiny pores and valleys where contaminants settle and water clings.

Ceramic coating is a liquid carrying nano-sized silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles. When applied to properly prepared paint, these particles fill those microscopic valleys and bond with the surface through a chemical curing reaction.

The result is a glass-like layer that becomes part of your paint, not a coating sitting on top. Unlike waxes that wash away, this bond lasts for years.

Pre-coating step

Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating in San Diego?

Sometimes. Ceramic coating locks in whatever your paint looks like the day it goes on, including swirls and light scratches. If your paint has visible defects, paint correction first gives you a cleaner, glossier result that the coating then protects. On a well-kept car, a single-stage polish is usually enough. We assess your paint before we quote, so you only pay for the paint correction you actually need.

Paint correction swirl removal before and after comparison

What it won’t do: Ceramic coating will not stop rock chips (that takes paint protection film), make your car scratch-proof, or remove the need for washing. Anyone claiming otherwise is overselling.

Questions

Ceramic Coating FAQ

Wax sits on top of your paint and washes off in about six weeks, especially under San Diego sun and coastal salt. Ceramic coating chemically bonds to the paint and lasts 3 to 5 years. You stop re-waxing every month, and your car stays protected year round.

Most vehicles take 4 to 6 hours on site. We bring our own power and water, so all we need is a parking spot. Larger or heavily contaminated vehicles can take a little longer.

No. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that resists chemicals, UV, and light scratches, but it will not stop rock chips. If you want impact protection, paint protection film is the right product, and the two can be layered.

Yes. Our detailers are fully mobile and come to you anywhere in San Diego County, including Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, and the coast. There is no extra travel charge.

It is the wrong comparison, honestly. Wax is cosmetic and wears off in weeks, so you are always redoing it and never really protecting the paint. Ceramic is one application that genuinely protects for years. It is less about saving money and more about real, lasting protection and an easier car to keep clean.

Very little. Wash every two to three weeks with a pH-neutral soap, skip automatic brush car washes, and dry with a clean microfiber towel. No waxing required.

The 3-year coating is a single layer and is a great fit for leased cars or vehicles you plan to sell soon. The 5-year coating uses multiple layers and a higher SiO2 concentration for longer, tougher protection on cars you plan to keep.

Yes. Ceramic coating works on boats, RVs, motorcycles, and more. Pricing depends on size, so reach out for a quick quote.

Popular add-ons include paint correction, wheel and caliper coating, glass coating, and interior protection. We walk you through the options when we assess your vehicle.

The coating sets to the touch in one to two hours and reaches initial cure in 24 hours. Full chemical cure takes seven days. For the first 24 to 48 hours your car should stay dry, with no rain and no washing. After seven days you can wash and drive like normal with no restrictions.

Mobile ceramic coating in San Diego ranges from $769 to $1,230. A 3-year coating is $769 for a standard car and $923 for a large vehicle. A 5-year coating is $1,076 standard and $1,230 large, with custom quotes for oversized vehicles. Every price includes application at your home by a certified detailer.

For most San Diego drivers, yes. Ceramic coating protects your paint from sun, salt air, and contaminants, keeps the finish glossy, and makes washing far easier. Starting at $769, it costs less than repeated paint correction or a repaint later, and it is most worth it on a car you plan to keep two or more years.

A professional ceramic coating lasts 3 to 5 years depending on the package, and longer in practice when it is maintained. Through Club Clean, your detailer adds fresh ceramic where the coating thins, so protection keeps performing past the base term.

Detailers in our network use Adam’s professional-grade ceramic systems, along with other approved professional products they select for your vehicle and conditions. The coating matters, and the prep matters more, which is why certification focuses on the hands-on work, not just the bottle.
